I have come to believe that every week is like Holy Week at the Heart of Mary House. In truth, the entire Gospels are lived out so beautifully each day at the house! Christ is here! He is here in the caregiver staff, in the volunteers, in the donors, in the prayer warriors and most of all He is here in the residents! (“They are Jesus in disguise.” -St. Mother Teresa)

The Traditions of our Faith are so tangible in the house that you can literally feel the closeness of Our Lord, of Our Lady, of the Saints and the Angels! Their love leaves a peace that settles in the air and suffocates all who enter. No one can escape it!

At our fundraiser dinner in November, Fr. Mark Simpson was our keynote speaker, and he blew us all away with his speech. What really stood out to me was how he grasped the core of the mission of the Heart of Mary House. He was able to connect the role we play as caregivers for the impoverished who are terminally ill, with Our Lady’s love for Christ, as She accompanied Him on His scourging path to Golgotha.

Many say, “How can you take care of people who are dying, day after day?”
|
My honest response is that it is something I have always been drawn to. It is something that feeds my soul with hope. I am specifically drawn to the work at HOMH because I’ve witnessed innumerable times how the Lord never stops chasing after us. No matter what! No matter how many times we fall! He is there.
|
It is not only that I feel drawn to the works to help my neighbors in need, but I also understand how our soul also finds healing when we serve the Lord through others. Mary is our model, and although we will never be perfect in Faith, we will get closer to perfection by emulating Her.
|
Mary was there with Jesus, day after day, hour after hour. We know She even had to break through the crowd to get to Jesus. Nothing could stop Her from being at His side. Her presence strengthened Him, just like our presence strengthens the HOMH residents.
|
Do you want to know why, like Mary, I also want to break through the crowd to get to our residents? Because of Easter! Because our residents’ last breath is not the end; it is just the beginning, and this miracle is something we are privileged to have witnessed countless times at HOMH!
|
